By OGB Joseph, Abuja
Former Nigerian lawmaker, Sam Onuigbo has formally assumed office as President of GLOBE Legislators following his inauguration at the UK Parliament, pledging to strengthen global legislative collaboration on climate action and sustainable development.
The inauguration, which took place on June 24, 2026, marked a significant milestone for the international parliamentary network as it celebrated 35 years of promoting legislative action on environmental sustainability and climate governance.
Reflecting on the event, Onuigbo described the ceremony as an important occasion that provided an opportunity to celebrate GLOBE’s achievements over the past three and a half decades while reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to advancing global climate and development goals.
The event featured goodwill messages from prominent global leaders and climate advocates, including Al Gore, a co-founder of GLOBE Legislators, who delivered an inspiring message. Also lending support was Yuriko Koike, former President of GLOBE Japan and current Governor of Tokyo, who shared a message of encouragement.
Nigeria’s Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, also conveyed a message of hope and support for the new leadership.
Other notable speakers included Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction; Nick Mabey, Founder and Chair of E3G and London Climate Action Week; and Pablo Vieira, Head of the NDC Partnership, all of whom challenged the organisation to sustain its momentum in tackling global climate challenges.
Declaring his vision for the organisation, Onuigbo said the responsibility before the new leadership was clear.
“The charge is simple: we will not let this light dim,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to advancing GLOBE’s mission through stronger parliamentary engagement and international cooperation.
He expressed appreciation to the host of the inauguration, Graham Stuart, as well as his wife, Pastor Dame Princess Chinyere Onuigbo, friends, family members, colleagues, parliamentarians from across the world, and development partners who travelled to witness the historic occasion.
Onuigbo’s emergence as President of GLOBE Legislators is expected to further elevate Nigeria’s role in global climate diplomacy and parliamentary advocacy for sustainable development, reinforcing international efforts to address climate change through legislative action.
