JUST IN: Dayo Israel: Leaders Must Speak Up When Silence Becomes Irresponsible
APC Youth Leader urges courage, integrity in leadership
By OGB Joseph, Abuja
The National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dayo Israel, has urged leaders to embrace courage and integrity by speaking out when circumstances demand, warning that silence, though sometimes comfortable, could amount to a failure of responsibility.
Israel made the call in a message posted on his Facebook wall, where he reflected on the difficult choices leaders often face, particularly when speaking the truth could attract criticism, misunderstanding or resistance.
“One of the hardest lessons of leadership is that there will be moments when silence is more comfortable, but speaking is more responsible,” he wrote.
The APC youth leader noted that people who speak out on issues of principle may sometimes be misunderstood by those who mistake loyalty for unquestioning agreement.
He also observed that leaders could face resistance from individuals or groups who have benefited from silence, suggesting that such opposition should not necessarily discourage responsible leadership.
According to him, the ability to speak with courage is particularly important when a leader’s intentions are honourable, the facts are clear and there is no conflict with conscience.
“You may be misunderstood by those who confuse loyalty with agreement, and resisted by those who benefit from silence,” Israel stated.
He, however, stressed that courage should be accompanied by respect, urging leaders to communicate their positions responsibly rather than resorting to confrontation or disrespect.
“But when your intentions are honourable, your facts are clear and your conscience is at peace, speak with respect and stand with courage,” he added.
The statement has been interpreted as a broader reflection on the demands of leadership, where maintaining relationships and avoiding controversy can sometimes conflict with the responsibility to offer honest counsel.
Israel’s message underscores the distinction between genuine loyalty and blind agreement, suggesting that responsible followers and leaders alike should be willing to speak truthfully when circumstances require it.
The APC National Youth Leader’s intervention also comes amid growing emphasis on accountability, internal dialogue and principled leadership in Nigeria’s political space.
His central message was that leadership should not be driven solely by convenience or the fear of criticism, but by facts, honourable intentions and a clear conscience.
Ultimately, Israel’s reflection challenges leaders to recognise that there are moments when silence may be easier, but speaking responsibly, respectfully and courageously may be the more consequential act of leadership.
