Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has formally obtained his nomination and expression of interest forms to contest the Bauchi State governorship election, pledging to confront insecurity, unlock the state’s vast agricultural potential, and ensure fairness in the party’s selection process.

Speaking with journalists shortly after collecting his nomination and expression the forms, Tuggar said Bauchi’s enormous land resources must be harnessed to lift citizens out of poverty rather than benefit only a privileged few.

According to him, the state’s over 46,000 square kilometres of land can be strategically managed to support both farmers and herders, improve food production, reduce conflict, and create sustainable economic opportunities for rural communities.

“The issue of insecurity and how to properly manage and harness the farmland that Bauchi possesses remains critical. Our land must be used in a way that allows subsistence farmers and herders to sustain themselves peacefully and productively,” he said.

He stressed that the goal is to ensure that ordinary citizens are not pushed into poverty and desperation through unequal access to land and economic opportunities.

Tuggar also emphasized the need for credible leadership within the political system, insisting that only candidates with integrity, public trust, and genuine grassroots support should emerge through the party process.

“It is important that we put forward people with credibility — candidates who command respect and enjoy genuine followership,” he stated.

The governorship aspirant further expressed confidence in the party’s internal democratic process, while calling for transparency and fairness regardless of the mode of primary adopted.

“I hope the process will be free and fair. Whether the party adopts direct primaries or consensus, what matters most is that the process remains transparent and credible,” Tuggar added.
