JUST IN: Olowojaye Engages Canadian NDP Leaders, Deepens Political Dialogue at Newfoundland Convention

Wesley Olowojaye, a political stakeholder, has participated in the Leader’s Social Meet and Greet session of the New Democratic Party (NDP) Provincial Convention in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, where he held discussions with party leaders on governance, social policies and political accountability.
Olowojaye disclosed this in a statement on his social media handle following his participation in the convention, describing the gathering as an opportunity to exchange ideas on local, national and international political developments.
He said the engagement provided an opportunity to interact with Avi Lewis, National Leader of the New Democratic Party, and Jim Dinn, the party’s Provincial Leader in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Olowojaye also met Sheilagh O’Leary, Member of the House of Assembly (MHA) representing St. John’s East–Quidi Vidi, with whom he discussed the party’s policy direction and its approach to addressing the concerns of families, senior citizens and workers.
According to him, the discussions offered deeper insights into the NDP’s Better Deal policy and its commitment to holding the incumbent government accountable.
The engagement comes amid broader political debates in Canada over social welfare, economic pressures on households, public services and the responsibilities of political parties in responding to citizens’ needs.
Olowojaye emphasised the importance of sustained political participation and engagement, noting that governance issues transcend geographical boundaries and require citizens to remain informed and involved.
“From local and national affairs to international politics, we must remain active and engaged in shaping how our people are governed at home and abroad,” he said.
He expressed confidence in Dinn’s leadership, describing him as capable of providing strong direction to the provincial party as delegates prepare for the convention’s plenary session.
Olowojaye said the plenary session, scheduled for the following day, would provide further opportunities for deliberations on the party’s policies, leadership and political priorities.
He also underscored the importance of responsible leadership and an informed citizenry in sustaining democratic institutions.
Quoting renowned Nigerian author Chinua Achebe, Olowojaye said: “A functioning, robust democracy requires a healthy, educated, participatory followership, and an educated, morally grounded leadership.”
He maintained that active participation by citizens, alongside accountable and principled leadership, remained essential to strengthening democratic governance.
The Newfoundland and Labrador convention brings together party members and stakeholders for discussions on the NDP’s political direction, policies and engagement with communities across the province.
Olowojaye’s participation highlights the role of political dialogue and cross-border engagement in broadening perspectives on democratic governance and public accountability.
