A Professor of Accounting and Strategic Financial Management of Babcock University and University of Ibadan, Professor Ishola Rufus Akintoye has disclosed that he wants the accounting students in Nigeria to imbibe the culture of integrity, transparency and accountability in the accounting profession.

Akintoye made this disclosure in a chat with newsmen on Saturday, 11th October, 2025 in Abuja during the inauguration of the new executives of Nigerian Universities Accounting Students Association, NUASA under the auspices of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN, noting that the purpose is to catch them young.

He explained that the only way to sustain the future of the accounting profession is by mentoring the younger ones so that they can continue to uphold the values inherent in the profession.

He said: ” The purpose of this is to ensure our mentoring role to our students in tertiary institutions, especially the University chapter. We still have chapters for the polytechnic and other institutions.

” What we do is what we call catch them young. They are the people we are handling over tomorrow. So, in training them as accountants, we want to be sure that we put them together and imbibe the culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability in them.

” So, while they are still being trained, this is the time you can do all that for them. That is why we identify with them. We are not only limited to teaching them in class.

” As an association, from campus to campus, from university to university up to the polytechnics. We move around to ensure that we share the goals and vision of accountancy with them globally. So that tomorrow, when we leave the scene, they can take over. That is the purpose of our coming here”, he noted.

Also, the Deputy Director, Examinations and Students Affairs, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN. Yemisi Adedokun, Ph.D., FCA, in her contribution, said that:

” I want to encourage students of tertiary institutions to enrol for the examinations of ICAN. The ATSWA examination and the professional examination.

With five credits passes in O’Level certificate, they can start with the ATSWA examination.

” It is divided into three parts. We have parts 1, 2, and 3. Four papers each for each of the levels. With five credits, including Mathematics and English, they can register, be it science or commercial students. Then, after they have completed their ATSWA examinations, they become AATWA and can proceed to the professional examination.

Earlier, the President of Nigerian Universities Accounting Students Association, NUASA, Temple Daniel Oghenerioborue in his acceptance speech thanked the ICAN President, stakeholders and colleagues explaining that he is determined to continue to sustain the legacy of impact the past excos had laid down for the noble profession all the time.

According to him:

” Standing here, as the newly inaugurated National President of NUASA, I feel deeply honored, not just by this office but by the trust that thousands of accounting students across Nigeria have placed in me and my team.

” A national mentorship and internship network connecting students directly with professionals and firms .We want to be responsible for our students. We want a situation where students can meet the industry face-to-face.

” We aim to empower our members through scholarships, mentorship, and access to opportunities. We will align with institutions and professsional bodies to open new doors for our members. We will educate by bridging the gap between what we learn in classrooms and what the industry truly demands”, he reiterated.
