JUST IN: 19 Northern states student union leaders rejects call for nationwide protest
By OGB Joseph, Abuja
Following agitations for protest by some Nigerians over hunger and rising cost of living under President Tinubu administration, the 19 Northern States students Union leaders have rejected and distance themselves from the call for the protest.
While addressing some of the students in a press briefing held at the Orange Garden in Wuse, Abuja, the leader of the body, Comrade Abdullateef Babapupa who led the 19 Northern Student Union leaders, urged all students to reject any form of protest and instead embrace dialogue.
It will be noted that there have been calls from Nigerians in different parts of the country to the President with some demands but the Northern Students union leaders however reiterated that the efforts of the government in such areas as signing the 70 thousand minimum wage for workers and student loan are something they are grateful for by the President. The protest is slated to commence from 1st August to 10th.
He said: ” The recent calls for protest are orchestrated by unknown individuals who seek to undermine democracy and national stability. Their true intentions are to incite looting, criminality, and violence, rather than addressing economic hardships.
” We stand in support of the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is working tirelessly to alleviate economic challenges. The government has implemented various initiatives, including a new minimum wage, student loans, and the National Youth Investment Program, demonstrating their commitment to supporting students and youth.
” We appeal to Nigerian students and patriotic citizens to disregard invitations to participate in anti-government protests. Let us unite behind the government we elected, the government that cares for us. Together, we can build a brighter future for Nigeria”, Maxwell stated.
