FG kick-start CNG cars initiative, promise free conversion, 50% reduction cost
By OGB Joseph, Abuja
The Presidential Compress Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative has disclosed that the scheme targets millions of cars so as to ensure a seamless transportation system among Nigerians saying the conversion from petrol to CNG will be free to save cost.
The Operations Manager, Omo Imokwede during the inspection tour of CNG facilities in Abuja in an address with newsmen stated that some of these equipment have already been installed to convert to CNG. He noted that there shall be a 50% reduction for conversion skits so as to save cost.
He said: ” Now, we target millions of cars that are going to be free or there’s a kind of subsidy you’re going to be given. So currently for the commercial operators, we are subsidizing the kits of the 50% and conversion and installation is free. Okay for commercial operators, we are in a very strategic position in ensuring that the challenges that are being faced currently in our nation is reduced significantly, especially in the transport system.
” As you’re well aware, the President has given us a mandate and that mandate is clear. The train has left the station and we are following through a million cars to be converted between now and 2027. For us at PCNGI, we are focused on ensuring that this mandate is met as you have been going around with us in Abuja We have gone through various locations. This is our third location today, where we showcased vehicles, commercial vehicles being converted from petrol to CNG.
“And for us. We are very strategic in ensuring that everything that we do in pushing through CNG, initiative, the adoption and the awareness comes to light. We are starting with Abuja and we will be going out in other states across the Federation. And hopefully as you can see, the work is ongoing and hopefully by the very special grace of God and with the direction of Mr. President, we will ensure that we complete that task
” Everyone is part and parcel of this great nation. For us, as we stand right now. The first thing we have to do is mass transit. Commercial operators are key, especially in the transport system in Nigeria. We are talking about food, we are talking about any sort of mechanical, electrical material and transport all over the country.
” Now for the private sector, that is also what we want to key into. Everyone has to be part and parcel of this initiative so that we can grow together. So for now, we have different phases to this initiative. The commercial aspect of transport is critical in ensuring that there is stability and progress when it comes to consumption of petrol and the cost of, sorry, cost of running your vehicle as a CNG. Actually, it’s something that we are pushing, we are promoting and it has come to stay”, he noted.
Also, contributing her view on how the CNG initiative is going to be a huge support and makes transport system in Nigeria ease life for Nigerians, the Business Development and Strategy Manager of the Presidential Compress Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative, Omolara Obileye added that the scheme they visited the NASENI Portland conversion center where they have started conversion for commercial vehicles.
She narrated that the first one that they have seen is from the inhaling cabs. ” That is part of the conversion scheme. The link curves are supposed to pay a fraction of the cost of the conversion while the transport associations have 100% conversion free and cost of the kids 100% free. So there we have started with the LM curves and the scheme is going to run around the Federation.
” We’re starting with Abuja today and Lagos and we’ll keep rolling out the announcements we made regularly as we go to each of the states. Nationwide, we intend to convert over a million cars like I said, we’re just starting the scheme with a period of within the first 12 months. The cost of conversion is free of the transport Association’s cost of goods. Cost of conversion is free. For inhaling cabs, they are paying a fraction of the cost of the kits and they are paying 100% of the cost of conversion.
” The fraction depends on which of the association’s and the locations that we’re doing them in. Right now. We’re in Abuja, they have a fraction as we go to other states, we will discuss the fraction Okay, so for private individuals, the cost of conversion, it’s a range so it depends on the cost side. We have foreseen in the US we have six cylinders,
” We have eight cylinder vehicles, that depends on the size of the cylinder that goes into your vehicle, but it ranges anywhere from 700 to about 1.8 million for transport owners across the Federation, the cost of conversion is 100%. Free to you please go to your transport associations key in and as we go to your locations, we would register you take on your details and advice on the conversion centers that you can go present your car and get free conversions”.
Meanwhile, the Assistant Manager NIPCO Abuja Ayoola Sunday, said CNG involves installation of physics kits in the area of the vehicle and then change over switch inside the cockpit as well as storage cylinder mainly in the boot of the vehicle.
He said CNG involves the installation of physics end kits in the agent area of the vehicle and the changeover switch inside the cockpit as well as the storage cylinder mainly in the boot of the vehicle. Now she is installed at 200. He explained that the reason for the storage of that pressure is to take a reasonable amount of the gas, they refill saying the components are installed in the engineer.
According to him:” Like I said before, if you look down there, that’s the pressure regulator. You start at 200 where you can feed 200 back into your engine, the engine utilizes about two bars so that the funnel directly to the regulator drops on the pressure for it to be compatible with the engine just like a foil injection.
” Now alongside that to the electronic control system that is able to match the original petrol signal to get the right amount of CNG for the optimal performance of the vehicle, where on CNG right now, the filling point is in the engine area. In some cases it may be in the booth, or in some cases for the purpose of adaptability in a bit alongside the fire tank, but for this case, it is in the engineering like you have seen it at this one point within two minutes.
” The storage unit is filled to the brim of Tonopah. I can take as much as 15 FCM 17 sem of, of natural gas, very few while it’s running there’s a pressure sensor. These cylinders are designed to withstand impact to withstand temperature. Alright, so in terms of safety it is safe.
” This transmits the level of gas you have in the cylinder. Just like you have your four gauge, alright, transmit the level of gas in the cylinder to the switch, which will be visible to the driver at all times. It’s as simple as those parallel gas injectors that are installed on the intake manifold, they run side by side with the petrol system.
” What happened is that it was fed through the system called CNG. Once run on CNG it holds petrol. Why run on CNG once it’s gas exhausted, the system switches automatically seamlessly to petrol even while on motion and gives you a beep that is not realo do. It’s as simple  th video I’ll just show you that this is the cockpit of the camera”, he said
